On the way home from our daily pilgrimage, we stopped by the dvd stall in kasambagan, atbang sa nahanaw nga paseo, which a few years ago was the coolest place to be seen and to hideout. The hubby has been bogging me to blog again.But ang pangutana, kung ganahan pa ba ko mo-blog?

Facebook memes was all i can do for a while but somehow moabot ang kala-ay nga way makapahupay. BUt the videolink of OBAMA (the NOOOBELle PRice WiNNer) saying that what yoou write in Facebook now, may haunt you later.

God knows kung unsay akong gi-pangyawit didto and i dont want my status updates to look like im a whiner, of course kapoy man jud nang mo-trabaho, but do you have to shout it to everyone who already knows!
Pero, kung bo-ot nimong huna-hunaon, its not only in facebook that will haunt you later but sooner than later, the whole Internet she-bang will get back at you. Simbako lang kung naay masuko nako nganong sexy ko sa una unya sexiest lang ko karon (hehehe). I dont begrudge people who are more beautiful later than before! What matters is they read me and not necessarily that i read them, their blogs i mean not their brains.

The past few months was not a roller coaster for us it was a tsunami!

Sinabi nya na, you are bad GOD kay you showed me that you are powerful, you took my son away and now you're taking my salt too, you are telling me that what you have given, you can easily take it away. So, dear friends, blurp your Lychee shake and enjoy Ploning.

Last October, I was a Cebu Pacific commuter taking the MWF early flight out to Manila and going back to Cebu late flight. I was taking some required review course in my quest to the greater life of being an eye doctor. Truly, their rates are much cheaper. I tried to calculate the cost of living in Manille for the whole month vis-a-vis the commuter route, it show that by making Cebu-Manila round trip is much cheaper by almost P15k. At least maka-ingon nako nga nag breakfast ko sa Cebu, sa Manille lang ako dinner, oh diva bongga! pasensya na, gamay ra jud ni akong kalipay. In fairness, the Terminal was so nice and feeling naa ka sa abroad ang ambience.

Naay poy kaisa nga gi-litanyahan ko sa lovelife ni Mamang Driver, with a conclusion nga masarap magmahal ang Cebuano, ka-ambakon kaayo ko sa taxi.

After attending a wake (haya') in Paknaan, ug sa wa damha, akong drayber nanghagad ug laag. Oi! milagro! Mama Mia!

Next we went to Handuraw Pizza, kay intriga kaayo ko aning lugara kay sige lang ko kadungog ani nila unya wa pa jud ka-experience kung unsa ni sila nga resto. Actually, I dont give a hoot! I don't know anyone there, I only concerned myself with the local society since they're the ones giving the certificates for the social insurance's accreditation. If not for these function, they're equivalent to non-existent. As in, maka-pangutana ka, naa di ay ni sila?

Six months before I graduated from training, I already plotted a plan to launch my private practice. I started ordering the necessary gadgets that a decent eye clinic should have, knowing that after residency there will be no monthly salary to lean on. Only your guts and kapalmuks! Unsaon na lang pag-bayad sa taga-liog nga utang! wa rabay mu-palit ug tambok sa seksi.

Since my hometown is pretty near a big hospital, I ask the ever loving husband of mine to buy me some stocks enough to have some kind of privilege in the hospital. Lovable man pud ko, so go! sugot dayon ang husbandry. I talked to the top person who matters and who has the biggest say on my application. Nag-yes siya! So, pay nami sa stocks.

Ever so expecting that I can have admitting and OR privilege, okay lang way admitting privilege, OR privilege lang ako gi-apas...

The big day came when the umbilical cord has been cut. And, I'm free to conquer the world!

I sent some feelers that I would like to practice now, in the hospital. Can I bring my sosyal pxs to the hospital ?

And I was told that I cannot, I have to take the diplomate first. Huh! This is not even a training hospital and I know for a fact that other doctors with no diplomates are practicing already there. I was not told that it's a requirement for the practice. A 360 degress turn about!

So, why am I not surprised that their eye clinic (hospital owned) which they have been neglecting in the past has an assigned eye doctor already?

You can put 2 and 2 together and eureka! you have the answer !

As for now, I have kept my peace, consoling my little ass, nga basig dili ni para ako, para ra ni ila! So, have the cake and you can eat it whole by yourselves.

1. IRL, im a very talkative person. During my elementary days, number ONE ko pirmi sa lista sa Most Talkative Pupils sa akong maestra, guess, this is just an extension of my loquacious self.

2. I have a very big thought, in short, nagdahum ko nga mahimo kung WRITER ig ka dako na ko, karong dako nako ug ....ug... HAWAK (waist). Nag-dahum lang gihapon ko!

3. I'm an insomniac, so the next best thing after watching TV and reading is tinkering with the computer. I'm not an encoder, so mamutbot na lang ko sa internet with my blogs! Wah!

4. I got inspired with those people who blogs even the minutest thing that happens to their life to the minute and to the hour. They are making a living diary through their blogs. SO, bakit hindi ko rin gayahin! so... GO!.... BLOG!

5. It's only in the blogging world that I can exchange word with the famous writers and celebrities, first name basis pa jud! hi brian, how's DJ? oh di ba!

6. Sharing is living... So I share my thoughts so that I can live, not yet to the fullest, but at least adding to it little by little.

7. Every opinion counts, I like mine to be counted.

8. Blogging keeps me on my toes, there are more word players out there who can mince me with their adjectives and nouns. Much more the verbs. So, I'm a pygmy fish in the Philippine Deep.

Lechon of my life!

Before i start my ode to my favorite food, let me apologize for not sending entries to the past 2 or 3 TBR's. I would have ranted on the unfit and cheating TO on the "Mentors, Tormentors" and would have written on my Lolo who shouldered my medical school bill with an iron hand on "The Doctor's Family".

The thing is the whole Colgate Family (yes, colgate! kay kada pislit sirit) went to the Surfing Kingdom in Siargao, were my entire GI system was wrecked. I puked most of the time due to the gigantic waves that rocked the small Cokaliong ship from Cebu to Surigao, then Surigao to Cebu, Surigao to Siargao and Siargao to Surigao.

I cried for the delicious Surigao BBQ, the lobster and king prawns and yes, the LECHON, that has to forcefully leave my stomach.

Lechon is synonymous to celebration in every Pinoy's mind.

But for this Pinay, CEBU LECHON is it.

I have to admit that there is no better lechon than a CEBU LECHON. You can argue or quarrel with me but I will stick to my Cebu Lechon. I can eat it any time of the day. It can be leftover adobong lechon with the crispy skin or the lechon paksiw with vinegar (my mouth is watering), sarap!

Years ago, my friend and I craved for a lechon. So, we went to SM Fairview (i reviewed for med licensure exam at Tating's Boarding house in Fairview) to look for one. There was a big signage in the food court "Lechon Cebu". We were so excited, we bought one kilo right away. Yes, virginia, one kilo for the two of us. With the first excited bite, we grimaced because it was not as we expected it to taste , it was hard, dry and bland. We have to drown it with the sad gravy they gave us, just to swallow it. We were cursing all the time we ate it. Well, we have to ate it kay sayang, mahal ang kilo. And we vowed never again to eat Lechon in Manila.

During residency, whenever the interns or the PGI's behaved or made a good job, I sometimes bring with them to my Lechon-eating-binges. During my "leche days", only the good ole Lechon can change the scowl to a smile.

Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur

I never thought that i can visit the place of my ancestors, the illustrious Villaluz Clan of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. My Lolo always talked about the place. I always imagined it as something mystical and their Kamayo dialect a music to hear, when relatives come visiting, with no 'rrrr's" and replaced with the 'yyyy's'. Like all small towns, everybody is a relative many times over and everybody knows everyone.
We took the 1:30 am Bachelor bus out of Butuan City and rode the dawn away, with the bumps and the invisible dusts making our hair straight stiff. We arrived at 5:30 am and people were already up and about in the streets. There was a pan-de-sal man with his 'put-put' and the 'labasera' with her fresh catch of fish from the bountiful sea of Hinatuan. The place is known for their biggest crabs, as they have fattening farms, fresh shrimps, prawns and fresh fish.

My uncle bebong served us the biggest grilled tuna belly i have ever seen. Pwerteng lami-a! We ate it in the banks of the the Enchanted River, Hinatuan's secret pride. The brackish water was very cool and clear, you can see your feet under water.

The Philippine Healthcare System is a big joke! Philippine ray tinuod ani, kay wa man tay HEALTHCARE, labaw pang wa tay SYSTEM! (Translation: Philippine is the only true thing in the statement, we have no HEALTHCARE to speak of, much more SYSTEM!)

Dr. Merricherri is encouraging us to have a no holds barred post. This topic had already made a deep and ugly cut, close to gangrene, among medical practitioners, so she doesn't even have to encouraged us. We are already seething with frustration and vexations.

In particular, I will rant (rant daw oh!, cheeseburger!) on the present brouhaha over the social insurance of our beloved republic and cataract surgeries. A hot topic for every eye doctor who cares.

It is so unfair for all of us eyemd's to be dumped into one basket with the rotten eggs. I felt that we were being persecuted, judged and being bludgeoned, even if we have not make a violation of their circulars. Us, the new graduates have felt the mega shocks of the rotten egg's actions, the collateral damage of greed and avarice.

Is it our fault that we can easily do many surgeries in a day? Is it our sin that cataract surgical steps have been overly simplified ? and that advances in technology has been good to us ?

Are we being unethical if we do cataracts without co-pay?

Patients talk and they have their own language.

Our group practice doesn't cater to the above average economic strata, the big eye centers in the neighboring city had already captured that niche. We are left with their crumbs and our clinic mostly received the minimum wage earner patients; the middle class, seldom strays in our door. These type of patients have bet all their hopes in their social insurance benefits. Arangan man sad kung dili nimo operahan kung dili ka c0-pay, bisag kinahanglan na jud sila nga operahan, ka dakung sala niana sa Diyos. (in english: Its a great sin against the Lord if you will not operate on this patients just because they cannot co-pay,even if they really need the surgery.english yan, cheeseburger ulit!) Whatever skills you have right now, you owe it to the Lord. Pay the Lord forward. People wanted to see the colors of God's creation again. Ug kinsa ka man nga mu-pugong?. (trans: and who are you to stop this?) We'd rather keep our conscience.

Let me clarify, we don't do any recruitments, missions or paying social insurance memberships for patients. We don't hire any cataract seekers in any form. We don't even have a panaflex sign outside the hospital. We only have our commitment to serve and the goal to earn an honest living for our family. You may raised eyebrows here, but it doesn't matter, we know ourselves better. Or yet, were still wet in the ears and is ignorant of the ways of the world.

We, at the eye clinic are all newbies, we graduated the same year and we all live in the same city. So instead of having separate clinics , we decided to unite our resources in establishing a fairly presentable and the only EYE CLINIC in the only decent hospital in the city. Mind you, we come from the different training centers in the island, but during our training we never felt any animosity towards each other even if our own training centers are in stiff competition.

And now, eye mds are being limited on the number of pxs we can claim citing that the volume of our surgeries can deplete their resources. For those fraudulent claims, there is no question that it should be denied outright and even reprimanded but what about us, who consciously follow the rules?

For every 10 insured members, only 2 will claim for their sickness for that year, that's how insurance works, right? To put it simply, you are counting on those members who are not sick to pay for those who got sick and difference is your profit. And membership is mandated, so wala kang lusot. And not everyone will get sick at the same time.

Even for those Family Card they are giving, the politicians paid millions for the membership fees advanced for 1 year. A politician friend made a non official survey of the cards that they distributed, he found out that not even 20% was used by his constituents. And almost all politicians in the archipelago have distributed this family card, motives considered.

But as one executive said, they are only giving us the privilege to be accredited to their insurance company. Short of saying, if you don't like us, the door is open.

And this sucks, bigtime!

It's the time of year again, that we have to withdraw our vacation fund for a perfect family get-away.
In a spur of the moment decision, Boracay is it!

The travel expenses alone is already a call center employee's two months salary.
But we didn't expect was the many fees that we have to endure before hitting the powdery sand, while the boat ride is only P19.50, the port terminal fee P50, the jetty terminal and the environment fee P50 !
(why do men collect payment, when God gave it us for free).
I only hope that this payments will go to were it's intended for.
And the locals have mastered the art of padding everything, for a P5 tricycle ride in Caticlan, they will charge you P40 aside from the tricycle terminal fee of P50. That's already 3 terminal fees you have to pay. For a P10 tricycle fee in the island, they charged P20. huwah!
In the island, almost all people are 'commissioners', they get a percentage of all the 'whatevers' from the tourists, local and more on the foreigners. And the food is so expensive !

But I admit, Bora is the ultimate beach vacation. But its no place for penny pinchers!

Mukhang wala nang panic attack ang lola nyo kasi ang happy niya na ang daming nagpadala ng entries para sa rounds na ito. Halos sanlibong website ang binisita nya para lang mag-plug o kaya'y nag-maka-awa na sumali na intawn sa 4th TBR, baka kasi lalangawin, nakaka-hiya naman kina doc remo, doc clairebear at my tokayo, doc termulo. Buti naman at may na-awa sa lola nyo.

Walang exempted sa sakit! Heto na ang ating mga kaibigang pinoy MD's mula sa kanilang mga sari-saring kaharian at pinaunlakan tayo sa kanilang mga personal na paglakbay sa mundo ng may-sakit.

Ang kaibigan natin na may pinaka-malakas na bulong sa buong sanlibutan ay nagkulong sa Room 717, ano kayang ginagawa nya doon? May naka-pagsabi sa akin, pang- morning endorsement talaga daw ang kaso. Dami daw bumisita na mga taga-showbiz sa kanya. Bumisita kaya si Papa Piolo? Maki-balita nga kaya ako sa kanya.

Si Kumareng MerryCherry ay kasama na ngayon nila Boy Abunda at Christy Fermin sa (sabay tayo) THE Buzz! . At alamin natin kung bakit bugbug sarado yung telepono niya sa ka katatawag sa mga ORL's.

Ang ating pabolusong pinoy doctor na nandoon ngayon sa bansa nila Nicole Kidman at Heath Ledger ay may payo sa atin. Pareho pala kaming takot sa karayom. Ang hirap pala yung dinaanan nya nong pediatric resident pa siya dito sa Pinas. Basahin nyo yung ICU experience niya.

Mula sa karagatan ng Visayan Sea, ang bagong dating sa lupain ng mga Haciendero na si dr shark ay may buong tiwala sa kanyang attending pag-nagkasakit siya. Mas maalagaan ka daw ng ibang doctor kung hindi mo ito ini-inis ng mga kilometrong tanong. Basahin natin kung bakit sa tingin ko siya ang perfect na model sa ating paksang, the doctor as a patient.

At si , dr. gigi ay may kaibigan na nagsabi na "a barber should not cut his own hair", just imagine him doing it, he might end up like Mr T. I share with dr. gigi, that please don't remind us of our own mortality. Life is so good if you're still alive!

While all of us were feeling the apprehensions and fear, our anesthesia lady, had tears that says "I felt so cared for and that was why I was crying.". To think that she was still having cases hours before her OR schedule. Amazing woman!

Truly the essence of a woman, is when she gives her power of life to her child. Let's hold dr. joey's hand as she relive the day that she unleashed this power.

BoneMd as the recipient of her mother's power of life was placed in an emotional roller coaster and had to endure the biggest task as the doctor of the family. His post had me dyspneic! A son's love to a mother is the greatest love of all. Press here para madami na tayong mag-dyspnea.

Our Pinay Megamom is telling us that we, doctors are indeed terrible patients, short of asking us to live what we are preaching to our patients (her dad is a good convert). And not be like the endocrine specialist who met a fate that is not uncommon with the rate we're going. This post had me dyspneic too.

"We cannot give what we don't have". Dr. Noel's essay on famous doctors who became patients themselves and had the opportunity to put all their experiences in writing sums this up nicely. And i didn't know that John Keats was a physician, i thought he was a romantic poet only! Discover more, here.

The huggable dr. clairebear is now a text book! Joke-joke-joke! She's just undergoing a text book case of a disease and its making her the worst patient ever!

Dr. Emer is craving for his favorite pancit, but i doubt it if he will still be thinking of his beloved noodle after it had wrought havoc on his digestive system. But once a pancit lover will always be a pancit lover, palabok included!

As an ender to this rounds, let us ponder on what dr. martin wrote on his entry, "Our illness is our inability to fully appreciate the exceptional blessing bestowed to us of being able to leave this world a better place."

Taymsa! Pahabol! the heatwave is in the building! yahoo was going gaga last night, i was not able to open my email. now lo and behold, there was simmering presence in the inbox from the man himself, doc harry. Get carried away with his rant !

Paumanhin po sa Tagalog ko, hindi naman halata na medyo baluktot, hehehe. Feel ko lang mag-Tagalog ngayon, kathang pormal sa high school pa yata ako last nakapag-sulat ng mahaba-habang saysay sa Tagalog. Pero, di ko kinaya. I'm so sorry for my poor attempt.

(I decided to post this early so that other participants of the Blog Rounds would have ample time to compose their entry. Since, I know that these are busy people doing great service to humanity and beyond. And, I will be going on a week long trip and I might not be able to get an internet connection. I was having panic attacks on what my topic would be for the TBR, then I remember the CBC I had last week, and boy, was I afraid of the needle!

As tears were running down my face, my son was laughing that mommy was crying while having CBC, when he doesn't even flinched when he had one last month. And my husband's hand had nail marks on it, it would have been teethmarks ! It was that painful. And the waiting for the result was most agonizing, Im afraid to see the platelet count. Dengue Fever is having a party here in our island. Walang sina-santo, bata ug tiguwang!

Yes! I will admit it now, I'm afraid of needles..... medical needles in particular. There's something on the IV needle that makes may stomach curl and the syringe needle, ugh! i hate the pointed menacing look.

I've had my share of sticking needles to other patients, and it doesn't bother me. I even stick it in the eye and Im steady as a stick. But how come when it's your turn to be prick, hell just breaks loose.

Doctors, are you afraid of the needles?

Doctors can get sick too. We are not exempted from aches, fevers,cold, you can include cancer, tumors, and TB too.

And I thought, this could be a nice topic for the TBR.

Are we afraid to be sick? Are we afraid to treat our family?
Are we afraid to treat our fellow MD's?

Why do we always advice other MD's not treat friends and relatives, it's better if we refer it to somebody? Are we afraid to treat them?

Ok, angkunon na lang nako. I'm afraid to treat them. I'm afraid to make mistakes, you see for every treatment choice for them, you have to think a million times of the various side effects and complications before you actually order it. You have to be cerebral about it. But we're sometimes ruled by our emotions. On the other hand, if the modalities you ordered came out undesirable, you will be blamed to death by those you loved. You will lose friends and referrals. They will not listen to your argument of the difference between complications and side-effects. To them, you simply failed. Ugghh!

On the other hand, whenever my son (katong baby pa siya) had fever, i always panic and over-react. I most often grab the highest generation of antibiotics. Then, after a day, fever subsided and his pedia would often tell me, simple hydration would have done the job. Looking back on this, again, I'm afraid that I would be blamed that I haven't done my best as a doctor-mother.

Or I am the only one feeling this way?

EITHER TINUNTO TO IYAHA O TINARUNG (TINARUNG BUWAD, NOY?) NAKALITAN KO SA AKO NG BAHAKHAK, WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIS ANSWER? PROBABLY , I WAS THE ONE HAVING THE WRONG REACTION. KAUWAW!

Lenten Changes

Looking back through all the past Lenten seasons, this '08 was the most unforgettable one. Lenten season is always associated with life change as we experienced the passion of Christ.

Although, we haven't been doing the usual religious practice of going Visita Iglesias, processions and confessions last week, it has changed a lot of my biases and perceptions of people. I spend 4 days with these (see pictures above) real and interesting people in a northern town. I was able to shed some of my biases, and confirmed some nagging feelings. It's always better to read the book than watch it on the big screen. Not all things can be perceived by just watching the actors but you have to see through them and feel their words, spoken and the unspoken ones, most especially. For us (well, for me) to be able to understand their stories. And to somehow share the pains and joys of our lives. I learned a lot from them. My gratitude to this fellow adventurers.

River Trekking on Black Saturday

My muscles are still angry with me. It still aches all over. Now, who would have thought, that me, a sedentary being would end crawling over the boulders and swimming along the current in a river in Catmon ?

Along with some 7 kids (11 yo and below), my hubby's bro (in some Greek alphabet frat) invited us, with another bro's family to spend the Holy Week with them in Catmon. He brought us to this native secret of a place, where only few outsiders have seen. The majestic falls that met us after an hour of grunting and cussing (hehehe!) was superbly spell binding.

Yes, siree! we brought our children with us on this adventure. And they outdid themselves, no grumblings were heard about the long trek. No whining about the cold river water.
Pretty surprising! They love the adventure! I love the adventure more!

Thank you for the superb vacation, Manok !

The eyedoc and the internet

I was a little late in discovering the joys of being online, i thought then that the internet would be for researches and for geeky people only. My only purpose to surf then was to look for Ophthalmology journals to be presented during the weekly M&M's. Then, I stumbled upon Bisayabloggers, and i saw that hey, there are a lot of interesting and normal individuals on the net. I browse on their blogs, and i was hooked ever since. It was just like an extension of the CB radios and the ICOM craze (break!break!) during the 90's. And I was very into it during those times, sleeping late just to make "kit-kit" (eat the speaker phone, slang) with all those people you only heard and never seen. But you do make eyeballs, once in a while and make a lifetime of friends.

I tried my hand at creating my own blog (friendster pa lang). The response was very heartwarming, people left very nice comments, and my interns and PGI's started to tell me that they read the my friendster blog. And, can i make testimonial for them? bwahahahaha!

Then, i stumbled on the real blogmaker (Blogger) and I never regretted it since. It's my husband now who's complaining that my online time is more than I spend for him. Poor hubby baby! It's just like your tennis and your mountain climbing thingy, he just sighs and still continue to pay my subscription. Buotan nga bana, love you dad ! And now he's my constant critique and would complain if i dont have a new posts!

And people started to asks for my "expert opinion" kuno on their eye problems and some of them even send their relatives to the clinic. Hey! i dont advertise ha basig ma censor ta sa ethics committee ani. Im just amazed that people believe in something that I love doing.

Now, im in the great crossover of private practice and blogging helps to pass your time while you for wait for stray patients coming your door.

Knock! knock! yes, marj? naa na patient doc. got to go now!

To cut for a living

I borrowed the title from Bonedoc from his latest post on the economics of medicine.

For the last six months, I have been on my own private practice, no more LandBank ATMs to check if my hard earned salary has some leftovers from all the loans and deductions. I now have to wait for the clinic door to open and excitedly peek if a patient has lost his way to my eye clinic. Yes, it was a patient and he asks nervously how much is the consultation fee? With a bright smile, Marj, my secretary said "150 ra sir" (this was before i join a group practice, well, we charge a little more now). "Sige lang mam, kay mubalik ra ko." There goes my patient, there goes my consultation fee, there goes my secretary's salary. With that promise, 99.9% of them will not comeback. That's how hard life is for a doctor, no patient, no moolah. (So, warning to all the parents who wants their little boys and girls to become a doctor when they grow up, be prepared to be asked for allowance even if their age is past the calendar month.)

Another dilemna. Now you have a patient. Mamser, this is your problem......, we have to this to heal your piskat, buy this eye drop and come to me for check up after one week. Please give your money to Marj outside. Yes! naka-pasyente na jud! Then, Marj, peeks through your door and asks hushly, Doc, pwede ba daw half lang iyang bayaran kay wa na siya ika-plete para uli. Tiwiwiwing! imo pa hinuong sala nga dili sila kauli! Marj, please tell them nga ako lang silang ihatud sa ila. (joke!joke!)

Kani, pasyente na jud! Mamser, kinahanglang jud nato operahan imong catarata para ka maka-klaro pag-usab sa mga binuhat sa Ginoo. Pag-andam ug $$$$$ para sa operasyon. Doc, pwede lang mi muhuwat ug naay cataract mission? Tiwiwwiwing napud. Vision is my mission, literally.

Lain na pud. Sige doc, ok ra mi mag-paopera. hangyo lang mi doc ha kay wa jud mi kwarta, wa na juy trabaho ako bana. She looks sincere and she looks somewhat not well off. Ok, mamser, hangyoon lang taka ug $$$$$. Then I chanced upon her being fetched by a Nissan Patrol, not surplus ha. Tiwiwiwiwing!

But this is not the be all and end all of my life as a medical practitioner. Lest you misunderstood me. I love my job, i love being an eye doctor in a third world country.

The Blog Rounds

Sleep and chocos

Waking up early is a struggle for a candle burner. It seems that all the emulsified cholesterols are getting their fair share of respite. But these old bones have to get up and be ready for work and all that comes with it. Such an everyday scenario for me.

We live quite far from the hospital and my son’s school, ngitngit pa gud ig lakaw namo, nindot pa ka-ayong iku-ub sa habol. What we do is sleep through the journey to the city with our pillow on board. Mag-lanug-lanug pa gud kuno among hagok ingon pa sa driver, mamukaw na lang na siya kung naa na nami sa Boy’s High. Pilit-pilit pa among laway ig mata namo. Mukalit dayon ug kaabtik akong anak kung abot nami sa iya school , dayon pangutana ” late nako, mi?”

When its my turn to got off, diha pako magkara-kara ug sudlay, pulbos ug lipstick. Dayon dagan sa taas para mag-rounds, dali dali ug ilis ug scrub suit para sa mga kaso. Usahay muhapit pa ug panga-saba sa ophtha interns nga nag kwinanggol.

After all the procedures, adto dayon ko sa OPD. This has been a routine for quite sometime.

You see, im the only resident physician in my department with no applicants in sight. We serve a lot of patients a day and sometimes mag-GGB (gulo-gulo buhay) ka.

Manawagan unta ko kung naa moy kaila nga gusto mo training pagka-ophthalmologist, palihug kontaka dayon ko. Dawaton siya sa among department nga way lisud-lisud.

Pul-an pud biya ko usahay sa akong kahimtang, pero wa na may jud koy mabuhat kung dili sa pag-dawat sa sitwasyon. As in NO CHOICE. The only redeeming thing amidst the fatigue is the smile of the people you have help.

Like what happen yesterday. There was a patient who sought consult. She was not my ordinary clientile. She was a rich looking old woman with an educated bearing. (no offense to my other patients ha, who belong to CDE crowd) She wanted to have a second opinion on her eye problem. (nakalitan pud ko sa iyang tuyo kay kinsa ra man gud tawn ko nga pangayo-an ug second opinion, ni konsulta na ni siya sa usa sa mga ginoo sa ophtha sa cebu who is by far very much experience than me) She said she just came back from the US, where 3 american doctors saw her, they were not able to satisfy her. After examining her, i told her that indeed she had a serious eye problem (total retinal detachment), if she will undergo surgery, there’s only a slim chance that her eyesight could be restored.( this is what the other specialist also said) I was telling her that you should’nt be sad or felt sorry, God is so good to you, your other eye is still good. God gave you a lot of blessings, He gave you a good life, at least you will not worry where to get your next meal, all your children have studied well and you have never experienced anything to being poor. In fact your blessings are way beyond the usual. But I impressed upon her that with all the information that she’s getting about her condition, she and only she can make the decision for herself. Either she will undergo the surgery and all its risks or accept the situation wholeheartedly. It’s all up to her. The technology to treat her will always be here, and she has no financial hindrance to speak of, but the decision to use it will be her’s alone. And that was it.

Then, this afternoon, two girls were looking for me at the opd. I ask them why, they said that Mrs. XXX sent them to give me a bagful of chocolates, one for my interns and one for me. There was also a letter from her, thanking me for the time i spent with her and that technology cannot be compared to truthful and heartfelt explanation. Of course, i cannot deny that I was touch (tao lang po ako). And definitely, Im not sharing these with you so that I can brag ( im not also sharing my chocos, bleh!). Im sharing these because I wanted you to know that there are still people who have good souls, who appreciates what you’ve done to them. These are the things that makes me believe in the goodness of humanity. And for us overworked, government MD’s, this is what makes us keep going.

"Myiasis" is the medical term for a maggot (fly larva) infestation of a living body. In this case, the patient was a 5-year-old boy treated by U.S. Air Force surgeons in a rural area of the Republic of Honduras. "The respiratory pore of a late-stage larva of the human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) was located in the anterior orbit," says the article abstract. "The larva was gently removed under general anesthesia through a small incision in the conjunctiva." The patient was apparently none the worse for wear in the aftermath.

Of botflies and blowflies

It would appear that the article itself was not consulted when this email tale was composed. Neither "bad dust" nor excessive eye rubbing were cited as causes of the infestation in the 5-year-old patient. According to entomologists, the human botfly lays its eggs on the bodies of other insects (such as mosquitoes), which then transfer the eggs to animal or human hosts by direct contact. When a botfly egg hatches, the larva burrows into the host's skin head-first and begins feeding.

This nasty creature is found mainly in Central and South America, but there are other species of flies known to responsible for cases of myiasis in North America, mainly blowflies. According to an epidemiological study conducted in 2000, most instances of myiasis acquired in the United States are the result of blowflies laying their eggs in pre-existing wounds.

None of which is quite as terrifying as the claim that any one of us could end up with a worm in our eye simply by being exposed to too much dust, which helps explain why the true facts of the case aren't circulating with the photos. In folklore, the story's the thing - accuracy takes a back seat to emotional impact, or, as folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand succinctly puts it, "The truth never stands in the way of a good story."

The long weekend brought us to the island of Negros. The Hubby was climbing the majestic Mt Kanloan with the Boylets and we were sent to the island of Sipaway just off San Carlos City (just 20 mins by pump boat from the port) to wait for his return from the mountains. Upon arriving at the WHISPERING PALMS BEACH RESORT (German owned with 5 wives), we were very much impressed with the clean cottages and well maintained shrubs and greens.

However, we were much disappointed with their services and with the German owner with a myopic view of what a friendly resort should be. He charged us P2,400 (>< 50$) with a family room with no TV, no 24H aircon (only 6pm to 6am, to save on generator fuel, kuno, but isnt that included in the cost ?), only 2 single beds, and he has the nerve to impose a 4 pax only to a room when his brochure clearly stated 6 pax to a family room. There were 4 of us and my son, he wanted us to get another room because ONLY 4 PAX ARE ALLOWED ONLY. How stupid can he be! the 5th person was a 9 year child. Luckily, he saw the light. But, oh my, the food was very much over priced (one order from their menu is equivalent to one meal we have, good for 5 pax with extra rice, ice cream and 2 rounds of drinks at San Carlos City) and WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING FOOD AND BEVERAGES. We don't mind paying top money as long as its reasonable, and, hello, this is not our first time to have an out of town vacation nor stayed in a "high end" resort.

We chose to be patient in honor of the feast day of San Carlos Borromeo which happened to be celebrated that weekend. We spend the rest of the day swimming, and there was no pool life guard ! the pool doesn't even have lights during the night ! And on the day we checked out, they was no bellboy to carry our heavy bags.

Whisper it LOUD and CLEAR, stay away from this resort.

Guilty. Joseph Estrada is found guilty of plunder.

This is an important mark in our history – the first time a head of state is tried and convicted of a crime committed while in office. Of course not as cold and uncharitable how we’ve seen people in Korea or Iraq did of their erring leaders. We are, perhaps, a compassionate lot. Look how we allowed Marcos to take a Hawaiian vacation after his ouster. And now, Erap while on trial, is well-rested in the comfort of his Tanay rest house.

The verdict was well, expected – assuming that the Arroyo Administration had a hand in the outcome – now repeatedly muttered as a post-verdict spin by the Erap supporters, that it is nothing but a political decision intended to legitimize GMA’ assumption to power. The logic, of course, is not farfetched. For indeed, following such assumption, if Arroyo allowed a total acquittal – she will be just supplying the noose with which to hang herself, so to speak.

But without painting any political color on the decision and by simply sieving through the reasoning of the Sandiganbayan would perhaps render irrelevant any suspicion of it as being simply a politicial decision. Setting aside pure conjectures, the court should be credited for such an evidently exhaustive and judicious decision.

Consider for example the court’s finding (and Erap’s blunder?) that he is the personal and beneficial owner of the “Jose Velarde” account, part of which was established to be the commissions personally gained by Erap in the purchase of Belle Shares using GSIS and SSS funds. The amount of commission paid: P189,700,000.00.

Here’s a pertinent snippet of the court’s decision:

x x x The Court finds that former President Estrada is the real and beneficial owner of EPCIB combo account C/A No. 0110-25495-4 and S/A No. 0160-62501-5 in the name of Jose Velarde.

The eyewitness account of Prosecution witness Clarissa Ocampo that she saw former Pres. Estrada sign the name Jose Velarde in the various documents presented to him x x x was undisputed by (him) and constitutes direct evidence that former Pres. Estrada signed as Jose Velarde.

Another direct evidence that (he) is Jose Velarde is the admission of former Pres. Estrada that he signed as Jose Velarde in the documents presented to him by Ocampo.

As stated, SSS and GSIS used the funds belonging to its million belonging to millions of members to buy Belle Shares upon instruction of former Pres. Estrada who benefited for his personal gain from the P189,700,000 commission paid in consideration of the purchase of the Belle shares by SSS and GSIS.

The amount of P189,700,000.00 deposited to the Jose Velarde account of former Pres. Estrada are public funds. x x x”

The crime of plunder which Erap is convicted of deserves utmost condemnation. I do not share, nor consent to the view that his being a former president extenuates the gravity of this crime.

On the contrary, the fact that a person of such high government position and entrusted with such immense power is perhaps the aggravating circumstance that impelled the legislators to make plunder a heinous crime in the first place. The respect accorded to the position of the President should be contra-distinguished from a rightful condemnation of the crime. We should learn to put each in its proper place.

Unfortunately, the media has turned this event into circus frenzy. No, I’m sorry, not circus, but a drama frenzy. On TV, we see celebrity friends of Erap interviewed, we see politicians deliver their misplaced sympathies and we see close family members and Erap supporters with their impassioned speeches, as if Erap is the luckless victim of this perceived elaborate contrivance perpetrated by the government against him.

The deluge of human drama and political propaganda the media has, wittingly or unwittingly, so copiously fed the public only served to bury the important underside of this whole event – the evil of plunder. It seems that the evident enormity and flagrancy of the crime has been lamentably blunted by all these. I have yet to see on paper or on TV the extent of the amount involved – hundreds of millions of pesos – displayed in big, bold numbers.

One finding of fact in the Decision which should not escape the minds of the public, particularly Erap’s so-called masa supporters, is the fact that the Jose Velarde account is the repository of such mind-boggling deposits that totaled:

P3,233,104,173.17

It is, I repeat, a finding of fact by the court. While the court did not convict Erap on this ground (sub-par. d of the amended information), as the sources of these funds were not sufficiently established except for the commission that he got from the purchase of the Belle Shares, this cannot erase the verity that he did amass such wealth through that account.

What I am trying to drive at here is the apparent hypocrisy of one who projects himself as man of the masses (people who for years have lived on the throes of poverty) but nevertheless has the effrontery of accumulating such wealth he and his family could not possibly spend in their entire lifetime.

What is plunder then? In the Sandiganbayan Decision, the Court quoted the legislative rationale behind this law, by citing The Explanatory Note of Senate Bill No. 733, quoted in the case of Estrada v. Sandiganbayan (G.R. No. 148965, February 26, 2002, 377 SCRA 538, 555), as follows:

Plunder, a term chosen from other equally apt terminologies like kleptocracy and economic treason, punishes the use of high office for personal enrichment, committed thru a series of acts done not in the public eye but in stealth and secrecy over a period of time, that may involve so many persons, here and abroad, and which touch so many states and territorial units. The acts and/or omissions sought to be penalized do not involve simple cases of malversation of public funds, bribery, extortion, theft and graft but constitute plunder of an entire nation resulting in material damage to the national economy. The above-described crime does not yet exist in Philippine statute books. Thus, the need to come up with a legislation as a safeguard against the possible recurrence of the depravities of the previous regime and as a deterrent to those with similar inclination to succumb to the corrupting influence of power.

The majority opinion in the above-cited case, penned by Honorable Justice Josue N. Bellosillo, further explained the rationale behind the Anti-Plunder Law in this manner:

Our nation has been racked by scandals of corruption and obscene profligacy of officials in high places which have shaken its very foundation. The anatomy of graft and corruption has become more elaborate in the corridors of time as unscrupulous people relentlessly contrive more and more ingenious ways to milk the coffers of the government. Drastic and radical measures are imperative to fight the increasingly sophisticated, extraordinarily methodical and economically catastrophic looting of the national treasury. Such is the Plunder Law, especially designed to disentangle those ghastly tissues of grand-scale corruption which, if left unchecked, will spread like a malignant tumor and ultimately consume the moral and institutional fiber of our nation. The Plunder Law, indeed, is a living testament to the will of the legislature to ultimately eradicate this scourge and thus secure society against the avarice and other venalities in public office.

These are times that try men’s souls. In the checkered history of this nation, few issues of national importance can equal the amount of interest and passion generated by petitioner’s ignominious fall from the highest office, and his eventual prosecution and trial under a virginal statute. This continuing saga has driven a wedge of dissension among our people that may linger for a long time. Only by responding to the clarion call for patriotism, to rise above factionalism and prejudices, shall we emerge triumphant in the midst of ferment. [Emphasis Supplied]

This conviction does not target Erap alone. I cannot subscribe to the view that the present scandals that hound the Arroyo government, while these might eventually be proven to eclipse the enormity of the sins of Erap, should serve to supplant our rightful indignation toward the crime Erap was proven to have committed. If Arroyo and his cohorts have committed similar or even worse crimes against the Filipino people, then by all means, prosecute and convict. And let this recent conviction serve as fair warning to them all.
